Students Kainalu Matthews and Arif Rahman place first in Shidler Breakthrough Challenge

Congratulations to students Arif Rahman and Kainalu Matthews on their awards at the 2017 Breakthrough Innovation Challenge!

As team "Good Egg", PhD student Arif Rahman and MS graduate Kainalu Matthews, proposed the idea of an automated washing and grading system of bovine embryo.  The noninvasive test for healthy embryo during In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) could help global food supplies by increasing the production of pregnant cattle leading to more livestock for greater protein supplies.

The judges awarded them first place in the competition, accompanied by a $1,000 first prize. The team also received the $500 Audience Choice award as determined by a vote of the audience.
