Systems and Data Science

The Systems and Data Science (SDS) group studies the fundamental problems that arise throughout the SDS pipeline, which leads from the original measurements to decisions, by blending (1) data/signal collection, processing, modeling, and storing, (2) probability and statistics, (3) machine learning and artificial intelligence, and (4) optimization algorithms. The SDS group is working in areas that study particular data modalities and systems, such as big data, wireless communication, computer vision, graphs, multi-agent systems, image processing, imaging/sensing, streaming data, and unsupervised learning. Our SDS applications include 3D cameras, biomedical image computing, data anomaly detection, medical image scanners, network science, power systems, and self-driving cars. SDS research at UHM EE is developing new models, methods and technologies that will continue to impact autonomous systems, city science, communications, diagnostic and therapeutic medicine, social networks, and other areas. In particular, the following areas are currently being actively explored:

  • Biomedical engineering applications
  • Communication
  • Control systems
  • Computational imaging, image processing, computer vision
  • Machine learning, deep learning, convolutional neural network methods
  • Graph signal processing, network science
  • Signal processing, information theory
  • Statistical inference
Current and recent funded projects are listed in these areas:
