KIUC’s Electric Grid Transformation

Speaker:  Michael V. Yamane, Chief of Operations, Kaua’i Island Utility Cooperative

 Learn what the electric cooperative is doing on Kauai to increase renewable generation while increasing reliability utilizing smart grid and battery energy storage technologies. Understand the challenges involved in operating an island grid as more distributed generation connects to the system. How much is too much and is there a system limit.
 
 
About the Speaker:
Michael Yamane is Kaua’i Island Utility Cooperative (KIUC) Chief of Operations. Yamane is responsible for the areas of Transmission and Distribution (T&D), Production, Engineering, Legislative and Regulatory Affairs and Safety. Michael holds a Bachelor of Science Degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Hawai’i at Manoa specializing in Computer Hardware and Software, Power and Control, and Communications. He is a registered Professional Engineer in the State of Hawai’i and is also a licensed commercial pilot with a multiengine/instrument rating.
