Speaker:  Dr. Ehsaneh Shahhaidar, Incube Labs

The definition of innovation may include various meanings to different people  The guiding principle at Incube, and its definition of innovation, is that the solution is embedded in the understanding of the problem. Incube focuses its research on understanding problems and takes an agnostic view of technology.   Scientists here select unmet needs that impact a large number of people rather than making incremental changes to existing products.  Hence each of their products attempts to make a major improvement in the problem being addressed. A good example of this is the current non-X-ray airport body scanners developed by Safeview, an Incube Labs company (bought by L3 communications in 2006).  After the 9/11 airline hijacks there was a heightened security at airports and an unmet need to detect non-metal explosives (e.g., C4) and non-metal weapons (such as ceramic firearms and knives, etc.) which are  not detectable by airport x-ray scanners, so another technology needed to be developed.  The solution Incube Lab’s came up with is laser light based technology, absorbable by human skin, thus creating an image that allows detection of anything on the skin, including non-metals such as C4 explosives.  This presentation will highlight some of the unmet needs, mainly in the biomedical field, that has inspired the innovations at Incube Labs and talk about Incube Labs’ solutions that have been developed and marketed.

Bio:
Dr. Ehsaneh Shahhaidar is passionate about engineering, innovation, and product development with a focus on medical devices.  She joined Incube Labs in January 2014 as a Post-Doctoral Research Associate. She has been a key contributor in multi-disciplinary research, medical devices design, electrical and mechanical integration as well as modeling, simulation, and in-vitro evaluations of drug delivery systems to treat brain cancer, atrial fibrillation, and epilepsy.
Prior to joining Incube Labs she was a Research Assistant with Renewable Energy and Island Sustainability (REIS) at University of Hawaii at Manoa, working toward her Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering (2009-2013).  She received her Bachelor of Science, and Master of Science degrees in Electrical Engineering from Shahid Beheshti University, and Iran University of Science and Technology, Tehran, Iran, respectively.
