Abstract:

Most population in rural areas does not have access to reliable and affordable broadband (10 Mbps/768 kbps) services. Affordable wireless communication technology will have significant educational, job creation, health care and economic development impact on minorities and rural communities in the US and throughout the world. Our group is developing a directional network system which integrates directional antenna, propagation modeling and cognitive spectrum sensing to provide effective coverage in rural areas. In this technology, advanced nodes equipped with directional antenna arrays with beamforming and beam steering capability will be used to extend range and provide wide coverage. This dissertation focuses on the design of the antenna array and feed system for the directional network system.
