Interaction of Electromagnetic Waves with Optical Metamaterials; Printing for Electronic Devices Electrodes; and the Real Engineer Real Human program

In this seminar, Kareem will present his research background that he gained firstly during his MSc in Egypt working on: designing and modeling the interaction of electromagnetic waves with optical metamaterials, the target was to achieve invisibility cloaking using graded volume fraction silver–silica nano structures, he will explain the challenges and the potential future work that could be studied in future projects. Secondly, during his work on a joint research project between the University of California Berkeley and IBM-Egypt Nanotechnology Center to enhance the resolution of Inkjet printing for electronic devices electrodes, taking the resolution from 30 µm down to 300 nm through integrating inkjet printing and soft lithography (forming micro-contact printed patterns), this technique will possibly open a new horizon for high resolution printed flexible devices that may be a future project at UH Manoa. During this project he built a custom Inkjet printer for conductive nano-particle inks that costed about one third of commercial inkjet printers with similar specs. Thirdly, during his work in a project in the Technical University of Darmstadt, Germany, on studying the influence of laser pulse photonic sintering on the characteristics of inkjet printed features. He may also talk a bit about his academic background as he was the founder of the Real Engineer Real Human program (REH) which is similar to the VIP program that we have at UH Manoa, yet with the REH had a broad aim to qualify undergraduates to be professional engineers and well balanced humans in all aspects of life.
