On-chip Cell Evaluation Using Robotic Approaches

Lab-on-a-chip (LOC) system has become a popular platform for cell evaluation and is particularly useful for biomedical applications. In this talk, the speaker will present his work on LOC systems including passive and active evaluation methods using robotic approaches. In the passive evaluation, a significant difference between the mechanical properties of red blood cells in diabetic patients and healthy subjects was found. In the active evaluation, cells were manipulated using a high-speed vision/actuating system for fatigue tests. Experimental results and videos will be presented in the talk.

About the speaker:
Chia-Hung Dylan Tsai is currently an Assistant Professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at National Chiao Tung University in Taiwan. He received his B.S. degree from National Taiwan University in Taiwan in 2002, and the Ph.D. degree from Stony Brook University in the USA in 2010. He worked as a postdoctoral fellow and a specially-appointed Associate Professor at Osaka University in Japan during 2011-2016 and 2017, respectively. He has been an Editor for Springer ROBOMECH journal and an Associate Editor for IEEE Robotics and Automation Letters since 2015. He also served as Editors for IEEE robotics conferences IROS2017/2018. His research interest includes Lab-on-a-chip systems, biomechanics, high-speed vision and contact modeling for viscoelastic interfaces.
