New for Spring 2021: EE693J, Radio Propagation Modeling for Modern Wireless Communication Systems

  Add to Google Calendar
Date:  Mon, January 11, 2021
Time:
Location:
Speaker:  Zhengqing Yun, Associate Professor

The objective of this course is three fold:

  1. Understand fundamental theory of electromagnetic wave propagation in realistic wireless channels such as urban and indoor environments
  2. Provide accurate and fast solution methods to solve propagation problems for modern wireless communication systems (4G, 5G, ...)
  3. Establish a common platform for students with different background (e.g., EP, Systems, and Computer Engineering) so that they can understand each other from different perspective and can work together to solve important propagation problems.

A final project of practical value will be carried out. You will be provided basic simulation tools (computer programs and databases) to develop your own modeling capabilities to solve propagation problems. By the way, the propagation modeling techniques can also be applied to radar applications.

Some special techniques such as machine learning, shortest path algorithms will also be discussed to tackle specific problems.

A brief description of the course content:

  • Electromagnetic waves
  • Antennas: fundamentals
  • Wireless communications systems
  • Geometrical/ray optics
  • Ray-optics field and path loss
  • Digital environmental databases
  • Acceleration of ray tracing methods
  • Special ray tracing techniques
  • A hands on application project

If you have taken EE371 or equivalents, you're welcome to take the course (senior undergraduate students can also take it).
