Speaker:  Dr. Jin Zhong

Dept. of Electrical and Electronic Engineering at the University of Hong Kong

About the Speaker: Dr. Jin Zhong received the B.Sc. degree from Tsinghua University, Beijing, China, the M.Sc. degree from China Electric Power Research Institute, Beijing, and the Ph.D. degree from Chalmers University of Technology, Gothenburg, Sweden.

At present, she is an Associate Professor in the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering of the University of Hong Kong. Her areas of interest are smart grid technologies, renewable energy integration, electricity sector deregulation, ancillary service pricing.

Abstract: Electrical energy has become the most important secondary energy in the modern society. Traditional fossil-fuel power plants are the major emitters of pollutants and green house gases. The environmental and energy depletion issues are the incentives to develop renewable energy generation and integrate the generators to power grid. Smart grid technologies provide the platform for renewable energy integration to power grid.

Energy efficiency can be improved by renewable energy generation and clean energy based distributed generation, whereas mitigate the environmental problem. The other method to improve energy efficiency is two-way demand side management (DSM). For example, electrical vehicle (EV) is well accepted as an environmentally friendly way of demand response. The intermittent renewable energy increases generation uncertainties in power grid. Energy storage is necessary to a grid with a high penetration of wind and solar generation. In this presentation, the issues of renewable energy integration to power grid will be discussed. The smart grid test bed for renewable energy integration setup in HKU will be introduced.
