Introduction to the REIS Program
Date: Thu, August 28, 2014
Time: 4:30 – 5:30 pm
Location: Holmes Hall 244
Speaker: Dr. Tony Kuh, Professor, UH EE Department and Director, REIS Center
This talk gives an introduction to Hawaii’s energy landscape and the REIS program. The state of Hawai’i and the US Department of Energy (DOE) signed a memorandum of understanding in 2008 known as the Hawaii Clean Energy Initiative (HCEI) requiring 70% of Hawaii’s energy comes from clean sources by 2030.
At the beginning of 2009 we formed a multidisciplinary research and education program at the University of Hawai’i at Manoa, (REIS) to focus on renewable energy, energy efficiency, sustainability, and smart grids. The REIS group won an internal UHM sustainability competition in 2009 and this past April won a DOE work force training grant in the Strategic Training and Education in Power Systems. In this seminar, we discuss the goals of our group including building the REIS program, research, and education activities, and interfacing with other UHM sustainability efforts, outside academic institutions, industry, and government.
