Abstract: While the term "Cyber" is used in different ways by different communities, it generally implies the integration of computing, communications, and algorithms. This presentation introduces programs at the National Science Foundation that seek to advance the innovative application of cyber capabilities to advancing science and engineering, as well as programs that seek fundamental advances in cyber systems. In particular, the seminar discusses the NSF's new Cyber-Physical Systems (CPS) initiative, the Cyber-enabled Discovery and Innovation (CDI) program, and the Integrative, Hybrid and Complex Systems (IHCS) core program.   Bio: About the Speaker – Scott F. Midkiff (smidkiff@nsf.gov) joined the National Science Foundation in September 2006 as a Program Director for the Integrative, Hybrid and Complex Systems (IHCS) Program of the Electrical, Communications and Cyber Systems (ECCS) Division in the Directorate for Engineering (ENG).His responsibilities within the IHCS program include cyber-physical systems, next-generation cyber systems, and signal processing. At the NSF, he is also a co-coordinator for the Cyber-Physical Systems (CPS) initiative and is active in Engineering's Emerging Frontiers in Innovation (EFRI) program, the Integrative Graduate Education and Training (IGERT) program, and the NSF-wide Cyber-enabled Discovery and Innovation (CDI) programs.Dr. Midkiff is on assignment to the NSF from Virginia Tech, where he is a Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering. His research and teaching interests include wireless networks, mobile systems, and pervasive computing.
