Alumnus/PhD student Khaldoon Ishmael and alumnus Dr. Richard Ordoñez awarded SMART scholar and Mentor of the Year Award
Khaldoon Ishmael is an UHEE alumnus (BS 2017, MS 2018) currently pursuing his PhD under Professor Olga Boric-Lubecke. He recently passed his PhD Comprehensive Exam with a presentation titled "Single-Channel Doppler Radar Non-Contact Physiological Sensing and Separation of Multiple Sources". Khaldoon has been working with mentor and UHEE alumnus (BS 2010, PhD 2017) Dr. Richard Ordoñez of the Naval Information Warfare Center (NIWC) Pacific. Together they have been named as the winners of the Phase I SMART Scholar and Mentor of the Year Award for FY 21. You can read more about it on the DOD announcement.
Dr. Ordoñez has many other notable achievements including a US patent in 2019 and the SPAWAR Dr. Delores M. Etter Top Scientists and Engineers Award for Emergent Engineer Investigators in 2018.
They have been working together on new methods to use Doppler radar for non-contact physiological sensing to remotely monitor human vital signs. The system has the potential to revolutionize search and rescue operations, medical research, occupancy sensing, and biometric authentication.
Congratulations Khaldoon and Dr. Ordoñez!
