Four UHEE and IEEE students, Brian Oshiro, Karlo Andrada, Ken Galvez, Kenny Luong, worked together to develop the “Vital Baby Monitor System” (VBMS) to address Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS).

Their work was presented and awarded third prize at the 2013 International Contest of Applications in Nano-micro Technologies (iCAN’13) (pdf) attended by more than 5000 students from over 100 schools. 

From their presentation:  "The Vital Baby Monitor System (VBMS) is a system which allows parents to get more vital health information about their infant. This information will allow parents to remotely monitor the child using vital sign information, bringing the baby monitor into the modern age. This information is transmitted wirelessly to a computer, and could be used in the future as a method of reducing infant deaths from Sudden Infant Death Syndrome.
The VBMS is encased in a plush baby pad, providing comfort for the infant, as well as portability for the parents. Two additional features – calming music and sound, as well as soothing vibration, will help to put the baby at ease when at rest. A portable base station can also provide information about the infant when the parent is away from a computer."
