Assistant Professor (Biomedical Engineering); Position Number 82086; the University of Hawaii at Manoa (UHM), College of Engineering (CoE), invites applications for a full-time, general funded, tenure-track faculty position at the Assistant Professor level, pending position clearance and availability of funds, to begin approximately August 1, 2023.

This position is part of the College-wide effort to establish a leading interdisciplinary research team in the field of Biomedical Engineering. The successful candidate is expected to develop an excellent, externally funded research program. There is the possibility of collaborations with other researchers in the CoE, College of Natural Sciences, John A. Burns School of Medicine, the UH Cancer Center, and the UH Center for Indigenous Innovation and Health Equity.

Applicants from all active research areas of Biomedical Engineering will be considered. The successful candidate will join either the Department of Electrical & Computer Engineering or the Department of Mechanical Engineering of the CoE based on the candidate's qualifications.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • To conduct assigned undergraduate and graduate courses or seminars, including via various distance delivery modes as required;
  • To develop extramurally funded research programs that result in publications in leading scholarly journals;
  • To present research work in leading scholarly conferences;
  • To supervise independent study activities;
  • To serve as academic advisor to students;
  • To serve on Department, College, and University committees;
  • To render service to the professional or lay community that is relevant to the individual's academic specialty;
  • To participate in curriculum development activities including the development of curricular materials and special instructional methods;
  • To participate on committees in charge of candidates for advanced degrees; and
  • To perform related tasks as assigned by Department Chair.

Minimum Qualifications

  • A doctorate from a college or university of recognized standing in Electrical & Computer Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering or closely related field (All-But-Dissertation, ABD, applicants will be considered; however Ph.D. must be earned by the start of employment);
  • Demonstrated ability as a teacher;
  • Demonstrated scholarly achievement;
  • Poise and good address for meeting and conferring with others; and
  • Ability to engage successfully in a multicultural and multiethnic environment.

Desirable Qualifications

  • Demonstrated experience in obtaining extramural funding from the federal government or industry;
  • Demonstrated record of research in Biomedical Engineering;
  • Demonstrated record of excellence in scholarly achievement, such as a record of publications in scholarly journals;
  • Scholarly experience in emerging and cross-disciplinary research areas;
  • Potential to develop externally funded research programs and research collaborations;
  • Demonstrated commitment to excellence in teaching and mentoring at the undergraduate and graduate levels;
  • Demonstrated ability in establishing interdepartmental and interdisciplinary collaborations in teaching and research;
  • Research focus applicable to or experience with Hawaii and/or the Asia/Pacific region; and
  • Demonstrated commitment to promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion.
