Assistant Professor: Data Science / Statistics / Systems

Assistant Professor, Position Number 82957: University of Hawaii at Manoa (UHM), Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track faculty position, pending position clearance and availability of funds. To begin approximately August 1, 2022 or soon thereafter.

The University of Hawaii at Manoa is a Carnegie R1 Doctoral University (Highest Research Activity) with a strong emphasis on research and graduate education. The Department offers the B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. degrees in electrical engineering and the B.S. degree in computer engineering. Both B.S. degree programs in electrical engineering and computer engineering are ABET accredited. Current enrollment is approximately 300 undergraduate and 50 graduate students with 18 faculty members.  

The State of Hawaii has a strong commitment to improving high technology within the state through legislative efforts, tax incentives, and initiatives, such as the HI Growth Initiative supported by Governor David Ige. The UHM ECE Department has identified key research areas to support this technology-rich environment focused on (but not limited to): big data, cyber security, sustainability, and related areas.

Current initiatives in which the successful candidate may engage include: 

  • NSF CyberCorps Scholarship for Service Program – a $5 million scholarship award for supporting cyber-security research and workforce development 
  • DHS/NSA Center of Academic Excellence in Cyber Defense Research (CAE-R) – a venue for participating many national cyber security research and educational programs, including DHS, NSA, NIST, DOD, etc. 
  • NSF AI Research Institute a national partnership focusing on dynamic systems and enabling innovative research and education in fundamental AI and machine learning theory.
  • NSF Center for Science of Information – a $25 million NSF Science and Technology center whose agenda includes statistics, information theoretical and big data techniques with a focus on understanding information in biological/physical/social/engineered systems, 
  • NSF-EPSCOR Ike Wai – a multidisciplinary $20 million NSF project to understand fresh water within the island system including development of bio/nano sensors, 
  • NSF Native Hawaiian Science & Engineering Mentorship Program (NHSEMP) – a long-term project to increase the advancement of underserved students in the fields of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) 

Focus Areas of Research 

We are seeking candidates with a strong research record in statistical/machine learning, data science, information theory/signal processing, or related areas. We will interpret these areas broadly.  Ideal candidates in the primary search area will also be able to leverage the existing areas of strength at UHM: energy, life sciences, computer privacy and security, optimization and control, signal processing, and information theory.

Other areas:  Candidates with strong research records in other areas of Electrical or Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Statistics, or closely related disciplines are encouraged to apply as well. 

Duties and Responsibilities

  • To teach assigned undergraduate and graduate-level courses, including via distance delivery modes;
  • To develop an extramurally funded research program;
  • To conduct and publish research work in leading scholarly journals as a record of scholarly activity;
  • To serve as chair or member of committees in charge of candidates for advanced degrees;
  • To participate in curriculum development activities including the development of curricular materials and special instructional methods;
  • To supervise independent study activities;
  • To serve as academic advisor to students;
  • To serve on department, college, and university committees;
  • To render service to the professional or lay community which is relevant to the individual's academic specialty; 
  • To perform related tasks as assigned

Minimum Qualifications

  1. An earned Ph.D. (ABD will be considered; degree must be earned before the date of hire) in Electrical or Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Statistics, or a closely related discipline from a university of recognized standing by the start date of the position;
  2. Demonstrated ability as a teacher;
  3. Demonstrated scholarly achievement, evidenced by a track record of publications; 
  4. Excellent communication skills for meeting and conferring with others.

Desirable Qualifications

  1. Strong research record in statistical/machine learning, data science, information theory/signal processing, or related areas.
  2. Ideal candidates in the primary research area will also be able to leverage the existing areas of strength at UHM: energy, life sciences, computer privacy and security, optimization and control, signal processing and information theory. Quality of research thus far is an important consideration, as is potential for establishing an extramurally funded research program. Exceptional candidates in other areas of electrical and computer engineering, computer science, and statistics are encouraged to apply as well.
