Assistant, Associate, or Full Professor (Microelectronics); Position Number 84464; the University of Hawaii at Manoa (UHM), Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track faculty position, to begin approximately January 1, 2023 or as soon as possible thereafter.

The University of Hawaii at Manoa is a Carnegie R1 Doctoral University (Highest Research Activity), engaged in building a culturally diverse educational environment, with a strong emphasis on research and graduate education. The Department offers the B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. degrees in electrical engineering and the B.S. degree in computer engineering. Both B.S. degree programs in electrical engineering and computer engineering are ABET accredited. Current enrollment is approximately 300 undergraduate and 60 graduate students with 19 faculty members.

Duties and Responsibilities

Assistant Professor Duties and Responsibilities

  1. To teach assigned undergraduate and graduate-level courses, including via distance delivery modes; To develop an extramurally funded research program;
  2. To conduct and publish research work in leading scholarly journals as a record of scholarly activity; To serve as chair or member of committees in charge of candidates for advanced degrees;
  3. To participate in curriculum development activities including the development of curricular materials and special instructional methods;
  4. To supervise independent study activities; To serve as academic advisor to students;
  5. To serve on department, college, and university committees;
  6. To render service to the professional or lay community which is relevant to the individual's academic specialty;
  7. To perform related tasks as assigned.

Associate Professor Duties and Responsibilities

In addition to the duties and responsibilities of the Assistant Professor rank,
  1. To serve as department chair when selected.

Full Professor Duties and Responsibilities

In addition to the duties and responsibilities of the Associate Professor rank,
  1. To assume a role of professional leadership in the department and in the scholarly discipline.

Minimum Qualifications

Assistant Professor Minimum Qualifications

  1. An earned Ph.D. (ABD will be considered; degree must be earned before the date of hire) in Electrical or Computer Engineering or a closely related discipline from a university of recognized standing by the start date of the position;
  2. Demonstrated ability to teach students from different backgrounds with diverse life experiences and learning styles;
  3. Demonstrated scholarly achievement, evidenced by a track record of publications;
  4. Excellent communication skills for meeting and conferring with diverse colleagues, students, and community members.

Associate Professor Minimum Qualifications

  1. An earned Ph.D. in Electrical or Computer Engineering or a closely related discipline from a university of recognized standing by the start date of the position;
  2. A minimum of four years of full-time college or university teaching at the rank of assistant professor or equivalent, with evidence of increasing professional maturity.
  3. Demonstrated ability to teach students from different backgrounds with diverse life experiences and learning styles;
  4. Demonstrated scholarly achievement, evidenced by a track record of publications and adequate for the Associate Professor rank in comparison with peers active in the same field at major research universities;
  5. Demonstrated experience in securing extramural funding;
  6. Evidence of participation in the scholarly and academic affairs of a university or other appropriate organization, or in an appropriate professional society or organization;
  7. Excellent communication skills for meeting and conferring with diverse colleagues, students, and community members.

Professor Minimum Qualifications

  1. An earned Ph.D. in Electrical or Computer Engineering or a closely related discipline from a university of recognized standing by the start date of the position;
  2. A minimum of four years of full-time college or university teaching at the rank of associate professor or equivalent, with evidence of increasing professional maturity.
  3. Demonstrated ability to teach students from different backgrounds with diverse life experiences and learning styles;
  4. Demonstrated scholarly achievement, evidenced by a track record of publications which has resulted in significant recognition by the national or international community of scholars active in the same field;
  5. Demonstrated experience in securing extramural funding;
  6. Demonstrated the ability to mentor graduate students to completion of M.S. and Ph.D. degrees.
  7. Evidence of participation in the scholarly and academic affairs of a university or other appropriate organization, or in an appropriate professional society or organization;
  8. Demonstrated capacity for leadership in the department and scholarly discipline;
  9. Ability to undertake a variety of assignments within the university;
  10. Excellent communication skills for meeting and conferring with diverse colleagues, students, and community members.

Desirable Qualifications

Assistant Professor Desirable Qualifications

  1. Strong research record in mixed-signal integrated circuit design, embedded machine learning, sensor interfaces, or related areas.
  2. Ideal candidates in the primary research area will also be able to leverage the existing areas of strength at UHM for applications in the following areas: biomedical, data science, autonomous vehicles, power electronics, next-generation wireless systems, or advanced packaging. Quality of research thus far is an important consideration, as is potential for establishing an extramurally funded research program. Exceptional candidates in other areas of electrical and computer engineering are encouraged to apply as well.

Associate Professor Desirable Qualifications

In addition to desirable qualifications of the Assistant Professor rank:
  1. Demonstrated professional leadership and service in related conferences and journals.

Professor Desirable Qualifications

In addition to desirable qualifications of the Associate Professor rank:
  1. Received honors or awards recognizing outstanding research contributions to the given field.
